As expected, it didn’t take long for Jorge Santiago to find a new home upon entering free agency, as today Authentic Sports Management announced that its client has signed a new deal with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. No terms of the multi-fight contract were released.

“I had a great experience in Japan, but I am now really excited to fight again in the UFC and conquer more fighters in the U.S.,” Santiago said.

Santiago (23-8) will be competing for a North American promotion for the first time since 2007, when he won Strikeforce’s middleweight grand-prix championship. Since then the 30 year-old, American Top Team fighter has gone 7-1 competing for World Victory Road’s Sengoku in Japan.

Santiago impressed during his time with the promotion, winning its middleweight title and scoring wins over Kazuo Miskaki (twice), Siyar Bahadurzada, and Mamed Khalidov. His only loss during that stretch came to Khalidov, who stopped Santiago in their first meeting at Sengoku 11 in November, 2009.

“Jorge Santiago is exciting to watch, and a real fan favorite wherever he has performed,” commented Authentic Sports Management Partner, Glenn Robinson. “He was missed by the UFC fans here in the U.S, and everyone is energized to see Jorge back and winning again in America.”

Santiago previously fought for the UFC in 2006, and after knocking out Justin Levens at Fight Night 5, he was KO’d by Chris Leben and Alan Belcher in back-to-back bouts later that year.

No details regarding when and who Santiago will fight in his UFC return were released.

Bellator Adds Undefeated Tim Carpenter to LHW Tourney

By FCF Staff

Bellator  has announced that undefeated mixed-martial-artist and BJJ black belt, Tim Carpenter, will compete in the promotion’s upcoming light-heavyweight tournament. Carpenter has gone 6-0 since he began fighting professionally in 2005. Most recently in October, the Philadelphia fighter scored a split decision victory over Jamal Patterson at Bellator 33.

“Tim was very impressive at Bellator 33, and it was that performance that made us realize that he could be a great addition to our Light Heavyweight tournament,” said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney in the official announcement.

“When I started looking at Bellator and I saw the list of champions and tournament winners, it’s really impressive,” Carpenter said. “You have guys that are at the top of the sport fighting for Bellator, and it’s exciting to get the chance to compete in a tournament like this. Once you hit that championship level at Bellator, you're in there with guys like Eddie Alvarez, Hector Lombard, Ben Askren, Cole Konrad and Zack Makovsky. It would be an honor to be mentioned in the same sentence with those guys.”

Carpenter currently trains out of Philadelphia’s Balance Studios under the guidance of trainers Phil and Ricardo Migliarese.

“The fight scene here in Philadelphia is great,” said Carpenter. “It’s really like a family, and it really pushes you to be at your best. I’m always training, and it has turned me into a really well rounded fighter. I’m comfortable on my feet, but also on the ground, and my training here has a lot to do with it.”

Carpenter joins D.J. Linderman, Daniel Gracie, Nik “The Machete” Fekete, and Chris Davis as confirmed participants for the upcoming tournament. Bellator’s fourth season will get underway in March and will be broadcast live on MTV 2.

Abe Wagner vs. Aaron Rosa Set for Titan FC 17

By FCF Staff

Just weeks removed from Abe Wagner’s stunning, first round stoppage of former UFC heavyweight champ Tim Sylvia, Titan FC has announced that the former All American football player will take on Aaron Rosa, March 25th in Kansas City. Titan FC 17 will be broadcast live on HDNet and will be hosted by the city’s Memorial Hall.

"Both Abe and Aaron like to stand in the pocket and trade," said Titan Fighting CEO Joe Kelly in the official announcement. "Fans attending the fight at Memorial Hall and viewers watching at home on HDNet will have a lot to look forward to when it comes to Titan Fighting Championship 17. However, Wagner vs. Rosa is the matchup to watch because it has all the hallmarks of an epic slugfest."

With the win over Sylvia, which took place January 29th at Titan FC 16, Wagner extended his record to 8-3. The former “Ultimate Fighter” competitor is now 4-1 in his last five fights, with his only loss during that stretch coming to current UFC heavyweight Travis Browne.

"I think the win over Sylvia was huge for me," said Wagner. "It's one thing to win when nobody thinks you will; it's another to win when nobody thinks you can. I'm just going to carry this momentum forward into my next fight. Aaron Rosa is a very skilled and respected fighter and I'm eager to test my skills against his."

Rosa (15-3) will head into the bout having won three straight bouts with victories coming against Robert Villegas, Jay Peche and most recently Devin Cole. Rosa’s last loss took place at a Strikeforce Challengers card in September, 2009, when he was stopped by the promotion’s current light-heavyweight champion, Rafael Cavalcante.

"It's a big fight for me," proclaimed Rosa. "I want to take his hype that he got when he beat Tim."

Titan FC will also feature the promotional debuts of Bobby Lashley and Phil Baroni, who will face James Jack and Nick Nolte respectively.  Additional match-ups will be announced in the coming days.

Loveland'sThrilled to Be Fighting Top Ranked Benavidez

By Kelsey Mowatt, photo courtesy Team Quest

While many fans may have missed Ian Loveland’s UFC debut this past December, when he scored a unanimous decision victory over Tyler Toner at the TUF 12 Finale, the veteran’s impressive performance evidently didn’t get overlooked by the UFC brass. In just his second Octagon bout, Loveland has been asked to fight top ranked, bantamweight contender Joseph Benavidez, and the Team Quest fighter couldn’t be happier about it.

“I’m really excited about it,” Loveland told FCF when asked about his upcoming, March 19th tilt with Benavidez. “I said I wanted to start fighting the top guys and I didn’t want to take things slow, so, I got pretty much what I wanted from the UFC. It’s a great opportunity for me.”

In Benavidez (13-2), Loveland will face a man whose only professional losses have come to current bantamweight champion, Dominick Cruz. Both losses have come by decision, and the rematch last August was scored as a split decision in favor of Cruz. The Team Alpha Male fighter’s record includes wins over Wagnney Fabiano, Rani Yahya, Jeff Curran, and former champ Miguel Torres, and it’s a resume that Loveland is keenly aware of.

“I take it as a compliment for sure,” Loveland acknowledged, while discussing the fact that the UFC has matched him up with one of the division’s best fighters next. “I think it’s a good match-up style wise; I think the UFC saw that. I guess I could be totally wrong; they could just think he’s going to beat the crap out of me for the highlight reel (laughing)...I think judging by my first performance and my style, I don’t see how we don’t match up real well.”

While Loveland (14-7) may not have the kind of profile that a contender like Benavidez has yet, the 27 year-old fighter has been steadily rising up the bantamweight rankings for some time now. Heading into the UFC 128 bout, not only has Loveland won seven straight, the 5’8 tall bantamweight has recorded two knockouts and two TKO stoppage wins during the three plus year stretch.

“I have the reach advantage which is something I can always fall back too,” said Loveland when asked if he may look to keep the 5'4 Benavidez on the outside and utilize his striking. “I just can’t see me going into a fight, where I’m prepared to pick guys off with a jab and have been doing it in the gym all day long, when I get out there that’s just not who I am.”

“My frame is such that I could fight that way,” Loveland added. “Mentally I like to get in there and just start swinging. I do have a little game plan going; I’m not going to go out there and be wild and crazy. I definitely am going to be rough with him though.”

Of course it will be interesting to see whether or not Benavidez, a former collegiate wrestler, looks to take the bout to the mat.

“He’s a good wrestler,” said Loveland, who will meet Benavidez at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. “His wrestling seems to work for MMA too, which you know, a lot of guys have trouble transitioning into. My MMA wrestling is also really good, so I don’t really see that being an advantage for him. I’m definitely ready to wrestle with him.”

While one would think that Loveland could be just a win or two away from a title shot, if he defeats Benavidez on March 19th, the Team Quest fighter is trying to stay focused on the task at hand.

“That’s one of those things that I’m trying not to think about,” Loveland told FCF. “Right now I’m just concentrating on beating up Joseph...Not only is it important that I get the win, but that I look exciting while I get the win.”

Knee Injury Sidelines McKee, Veach to Face Fickett at MFC 28

Sunday, February 20, 2011

By FCF Staff

The Maximum Fighting Championship has announced that lightweight champion Antonio McKee has been forced to withdraw from his February 25th title defence against fellow vet Drew Fickett, due to a knee injury. Stepping in on just days notice is UFC veteran Matt Veach, who will face Fickett in a non-title, 160lb. catch-weight bout.

“I’m disappointed not to be facing McKee for the title but it’s only a matter of time until I get my hands on the MFC lightweight belt,” said Fickett in a press release from the promotion.

“It’s truly a sign of what some fighters are made out of,” added MFC Owner/President Mark Pavelich. “Drew Fickett didn’t hesitate one bit to accept the change in opponent, and Matt Veach showed the amount of courage he’s got in taking the fight with Fickett on short notice.”

Veach (15-2) has won four straight bouts since exiting from the UFC last year. Most recently the HIT Squad fighter worked his way to a split decision victory over Donovan Winters on January 29th, while competing under the Capital City Cage Wars banner. This Friday’s bout will mark Veach’s MFC return, as in May, 2008, he earned a unanimous decision over Matt MacGrath at the promotion’s sixteenth event.

Fickett (40-13) hasn’t competed since September 10th, when he defeated Charles Bennett, Dennis Bermudez, and Carlo Prater to win Shine’s lightweight grand-prix. The UFC vet has won four fights in a row after dropping five straight in 2009.

MFC 28 will be hosted by the River Cree Resort and Casino in Enoch, Alberta, and will also feature a bout between Ryan Jimmo and Dwayne Lewis to determine the promotion’s light-heavyweight championship. The February 25th card will be broadcast live on HDNet.

Ortiz Injured, Davis Fighting Nogueira Mar. 26th

By FCF Staff

Tito Ortiz’s quest to end his three fight losing streak has been delayed, as the Ultimate Fighting Championship has announced that the former light-heavyweight champ has been forced to withdraw from his upcoming March 26th bout with Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. Ortiz (pictured) reportedly incurred a concussion and a cut requiring stitches after clashing heads accidently with a training partner, and will be unable to compete at the UFC Fight Night card as scheduled.

Stepping in as a replacement for Ortiz is the undefeated Phil “Mr. Wonderful” Davis (8-0). Since signing with the UFC the former NCAA Division 1 wrestling champ has gone 4-0. Most recently, at UFC 123 in November, Davis tapped out Tim Boetsch with a second round, kimura.

Nogueira (19-4) is coming off his first loss since 2007, as the BJJ black belt and Pride vet lost by unanimous decision to Ryan Bader at UFC 119 in September. Prior to that Nogueira scored wins over Luiz Arthur Cane and Jason Brilz, after arriving in the UFC in 2009.

The March 26th Fight Night card will be hosted by Seattle’s KeyArena and will be broadcast live on Spike.
