Despite a determined effort, Pat Curran could not match the striking skills of Bellator Lightweight Champion Eddie Alvarez in Uncasville, Connecticut, last night and lost by unanimous decision to the renowned fighter. Throughout the five round affair, an elusive Alvarez punished Curran with punches to the head and body, while occasionally turning to his wrestling skills to throw the challenger further off balance. To Curran’s credit, the underdog fighter never went away and offered counter punches throughout the bout, but was unable to catch the champion with any telling strikes. In other action from Bellator 39: Patricky Freire devastated Toby Imada with a flying knee and follow up left hook, to bring their lightweight semi-final bout to a violent end in the first round, and in the welterweight tournament’s semi-final, former Judo Olympian Rick Hawn worked his way to a narrow, split decision win over former champ Lyman Good.
The MTV 2 broadcast began with a 175lb. catch-weight bout between Ben Saunders and Matt Lee, which saw the UFC vet bloody an extremely game Lee with knees and punches, before doctor’s brought the bout to an end in round three.
Here are the results from last night’s Bellator 39 broadcast.
