Jordan Mein Talks Win Over Josh Burkman, Likely Bout with Marius Zaromskis

Tuesday, April 26, 2011

For some time now, many throughout the Canadian MMA community have expected that rising fighter Jordan “Young Guns” Mein, would eventually join the growing list of Canadians that have signed with the UFC. Similar to other noteworthy prospects from the nation, like current Octagon competitor Rory MacDonald, Mein began fighting before he was 18. Over the last few years not only has Mein gone on to become one of Canada’s busiest fighters, he’s become one of the country’s best welterweights, evidenced by his recent, April 2nd, unanimous decision win over UFC vet Josh Burkman. (Pictured: Jordan Mein with his father Lee)

“I thought it was overall a good performance,” Mein (21-7) recently told FCF, when asked to assess his victory over Burkman at Knockout Entertainment’s “Reckoning” event. “I thought it was a good learning experience; even though I won I still took away a lot from that fight...Keeping my hands tighter, using more kicks, but I learned a lot from it.”

While the bout was extremely competitive, Mein likely earned the judge’s favour through outscoring Burkman on his feet and by remaining aggressive throughout. In addition, one of the elements that stood out was Mein’s ability to counter the wrestling skills of Burkman, aside from a highlight reel slam the UFC vet landed in the second frame.

“It was big factor in the fight,” said Mein while discussing his own wrestling skills. “He slammed me really good one time because I overcommitted on the guillotine, and didn’t work for the underhooks, but it was another good learning experience fighting a top wrestler like that.”

“I think my conditioning also really helped in that fight,” Mein added. “Not only in the fight itself but when I got hit and was rocked it allowed me to recover more quickly. Overall, I think he was tired later on, he had a lot of muscle, so I knew that might play a factor in the fight.”

Mein’s latest win not only was noticed widely in Canada because the bout was aired on The Score sports network, but because it marked the second time in 2011 that Mein has defeated a UFC vet. In January, at Wreck MMA’s “Strong and Proud” event, Mein stopped Joe “Diesel” Riggs in the second round. As a result of his recent successes, speculation has likely never been more rampant, as to whether or not the UFC has inquired about Mein’s availability.

“They haven’t contacted us,” said Mein, whose only losses in his last 15 fights came against former UFC competitor Jason High and Bellator vet Mike Ricci. “My Dad’s (Lee Mein) has talked a little bit to Joe Silva but nothing really in that area. I believe I’ll be fighting Marius Zaromskis next on June 10th in Mississauga, Ontario, for the Score once again. It should be awesome.”

While Mein’s overall MMA game has improved substantially over the last few years, the 21 year-old has long been credited for possessing solid striking skills. Of course, in Zaromskis (14-5), Mein will face a man who also has produced several highlight reel stoppages, and the Lethbridge fighter is looking forward to the challenge.

“My Dad told me he heard Marius has been training at AKA working on his wrestling,” Mein noted. “He’s going to be dangerous everywhere. He’s a really dangerous athlete and has really good striking, so it’s going to be a war like usual.”

Drew Fickett vs. Hermes Franca to Headline MFC 30

By FCF Staff

Maximum Fighting Championship has announced that a lightweight bout between UFC veterans Drew Fickett and Hermes Franca, will headline the promotion’s upcoming June 10th, “Up Close & Personal” event. The bout will be contested for the vacant MFC lightweight championship.

After heading to Windsor, Ontario for its last event, the promotion will return to Edmonton, Alberta for MFC 30, which will take place at the city’s Mayfield Conference Center.

“The passion that our longtime fans have is truly something special and that sense of loyalty made me want to do another show in Edmonton,” MFC owner Mark Pavelich was quoted saying in the official announcement. “Putting this event together, I became instantly as excited about what’s in store for MFC 30 as I was for MFC 29 at Caesars Windsor. I think it will be an epic night.”

Fickett (41-13) made his MFC debut in February and tapped out Matt Veach with a first round, armbar. The veteran has now won five straight, a streak which includes winning Shine Fight’s lightweight grand-prix last year.

Franca (21-11) is also coming off a successful MFC debut, as the veteran knocked out Robert Washington in the second round last month, at the organization’s aforementioned “Conquer” event in Windsor. In Franca’s only other 2011 appearance, he tapped out Jorge Sarat at a G-Force Fights card in February.

Other bouts that have been confirmed for MFC 30 include a lightweight tilt between UFC vet Marcus Davis (18-8) and Richie Whitson (11-1), and at welterweight, Sheldon Westcott (4-1-1) will rematch Thomas “Wildman” Denny (27-18-1).

Phil Davis Replaces Injured Jon Jones vs. Rashad Evans

Monday, April 25, 2011

By FCF Staff

Rashad Evans will not face his former teammate and training partner Jon Jones in his next fight after all, as today the UFC has announced that the light-heavyweight champion has been forced to withdraw from UFC 133 due to injury. Instead, Evans will take on another rising star in Phil Davis, who according to the official announcement, has verbally agreed to replace Jones.

UFC 133 is scheduled to take place August 6th in Philadelphia.

The undefeated Davis (9-0) is coming off his most impressive win to date, as the decorated collegiate wrestler scored a unanimous decision over the renowned Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, at Fight Night 24 in March. Davis has won five straight since signing with the UFC last year.

Evans (15-1-1) has not fought since March, 2010 when he worked his way to a unanimous decision win over fellow, former champ, “Rampage” Jackson. Evans has now had two title fights fall through recently, as he was forced to withdraw from a scheduled bout with former champ Mauricio “Shogun” Rua last month, due to injury.

Some of the other bouts that have been confirmed for UFC 133 include light-heavyweight Rich Franklin vs. the aforementioned Nogueira, middleweight Vitor Belfort vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama and bantamweight Michael McDonald vs. Nick Pace.

Christian M’Pumbu and Richard Hale Advance to Bellator LHW Finals

Sunday, April 24, 2011

By FCF Staff; photo courtesy Bellator FC

Richard Hale and Christian M’Pumbu entrenched a future bout between the two, at last night’s Bellator 42 card in Concho, Oklahoma, by winning their respective light-heavyweight tourney semifinals.

M’Pumbu put an end to Tim Carpenter’s night early, by catching the aggressive BJJ blackbelt with a hard overhand right and follow up uppercut, which sent him crashing to the mat. After the referee promptly intervened to bring an end to the bout, Carpenter protested what he appeared to believe was an early stoppage, while an emotional M’Pumbu celebrated the dramatic win. (Pictured: M'Pumbu celebrating the win)

In the other semi, Hale and D.J. Linderman battled it out for three hard fought rounds. The much taller Hale utilized leg kicks and jabs in an attempt to keep his opponent at bay, while Linderman constantly moved forward to close the distance. After Hale dominated round three, by taking Linderman’s back and maintaining the position for most of the frame, two of the three judges awarded “Rare Breed” the decision win.

“Bellator 42 was a great night of fights with spectacular performances by M’Pumbu and Hale to advance to our first-ever Bellator Light Heavyweight Finals,” said Bellator Chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney. “The season continues to produce amazing MMA for fans and the MTV2 audience.”

Sengoku vet Ronnie Mann was impressive in his Bellator debut, as the featherweight pounded out a dominant UD win over Josh Arocho. Mann was able to either negate Arocho’s takedown attempts or sweep the experienced wrestler throughout the fight, to in turn punish his opponent with ground-and-pound strikes for the majority of the bout.

Light-Heavyweight Tournament Semifinals

Richard Hale def. D.J. Linderman by Split Decision [29-28, 29-28, 29-28]
