The topic of judging has been a hot button issue lately in the world of MMA, and while often controversial and scrutinized decisions are left to stand, M-1 Global has announced today that at least one has been overturned. According to a press release sent out from the promotion today, an appeal by Pat Bennett to review the draw which was handed out following his December 10th bout with Alexander Volkov has been successful, and the heavyweight has been awarded the unanimous decision win. “The appeal process is in place to provide fighters an avenue to request a review of highly controversial decisions and Bennett’s appeal was extremely warranted,” M-1’s Director of Operations Evgeni Kogan was quoted saying in the announcement. “Although the overturning of a decision is rare, the independent IMA panel and it’s head judge felt it necessary to alter the outcome based on Bennett’s takedowns, ground control and aggression.”

With the successful appeal, Bennett extends his professional record to 4-2, and returns to the winner’s column after losing to Kenny Garner last September.

“It feels great to have this weight lifted off my shoulders. I was encouraged to submit the appeal but I knew it was going to be a tough, lengthy process and that having a decision overturned is quite rare. It’s incredible to have a process in place for this type of situation and to get what I deserved.”

“I have no fear of fighting overseas and am hoping the next opportunity to fight in Russia comes quickly. Although the appeal process has proven to work, I’m more motivated to finish. If I take the fight out of the judges’ hands, I am in full control of my own destiny. Thanks to M-1 Global for their continued support!”

M-1 Global’s next event is scheduled for March 5th in Moscow, Russia.
